2:9 すると、主の使いが彼らのところに来て、主の栄光が回りを照らしたので、彼らはひどく恐れた。
2:10 御使いは彼らに言った。「恐れることはありません。今、私はこの民全体のためのすばらしい喜びを知らせに来たのです。
2:11 きょうダビデの町で、あなたがたのために、救い主がお生まれになりました。この方こそ主キリストです。

2:10 シオンの娘よ。喜び歌え。楽しめ。見よ。わたしは来て、あなたのただ中に住む。――主の御告げ。――

このことばは同時に、クリスマスのメッセージなのではないでしょうか。三つの事柄について考えたいと思います。

まず、第一に、どのような状況に置かれても、そうたやすくすることができないようなこと、すなわち、喜び歌い、楽しむということに対する提案ではなくて、命令がなされているということです。

2:9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
2:10 Then the angel told them, “Stop being afraid! Listen! I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.
2:11 Today your Savior, the Lord Messiah, was born in the city of David.

Zechariah
2:10 Sing and rejoice, daughter of Zion! Take note! I am coming to live in your midst,” declares the Lord.

Supposing that this last verse is, at the same time, the message for Christmas day. I would like to consider three things today.

To begin with, we actually are commanded, rather than encouraged, to rejoice, sing and be glad under any circumstances, which is not such an easy thing to do.

2:15 御使いたちが彼らを離れて天に帰ったとき、羊飼いたちは互いに話し合った。「さあ、ベツレヘムに行って、主が私たちに知らせてくださったこの出来事を見て来よう。」

2:16 そして急いで行って、マリヤとヨセフと、飼葉おけに寝ておられるみどりごとを捜し当てた。

2:17 それを見たとき、羊飼いたちは、この幼子について告げられたことを知らせた。

2:18 それを聞いた人たちはみな、羊飼いの話したことに驚いた。

2:19 しかしマリヤは、これらのことをすべて心に納めて、思いを巡らしていた。

2:20 羊飼いたちは、見聞きしたことが、全部御使いの話のとおりだったので、神をあがめ、賛美しながら帰って行った。

2:9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

2:10 Then the angel told them, “Stop being afraid! Listen! I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.

2:11 Today your Savior, the Lord Messiah, was born in the city of David.

2:12 And this will be a sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a feeding trough.”

2:13 Suddenly, a multitude of the Heavenly Army appeared with the angel, praising God by saying,

2:14 “Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth to people who enjoy his favor!”

2:15 When the angels had left them and gone back to heaven, the shepherds told one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see what has taken place that the Lord has told us about.”

2:16 So they went quickly and found Mary and Joseph with the baby, who was lying in the feeding trough.

2:17 When they saw this, they repeated what they had been told about this child.

2:18 All who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them.

2:19 However, Mary continued to treasure all these things in her heart and to ponder them.

2:20 Then the shepherds returned to their flock, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.

1:3 日の下で、どんなに労苦しても、それが人に何の益になろう。

1:14 私は、日の下で行なわれたすべてのわざを見たが、なんと、すべてがむなしいことよ。風を追うようなものだ。

1:16 私は自分の心にこう語って言った。「今や、私は、私より先にエルサレムにいただれよりも知恵を増し加えた。私の心は多くの知恵と知識を得た。」

1:17 私は、一心に知恵と知識を、狂気と愚かさを知ろうとした。それもまた風を追うようなものであることを知った。

Ecclesiastes

1:1 The words of the Teacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

1:2 “Utterly pointless,” says the Teacher. “Absolutely pointless; everything is pointless.”

1:3 What does a man gain from all of the work that he undertakes on earth?

1:14 I observed every activity done on earth. My conclusion: all of it is pointless―like chasing after the wind.

1:16 I told myself, “I have become greater and wiser than anyone who ruled before me in Jerusalem―yes, I have acquired a great deal of wisdom and knowledge.”

1:17 So I dedicated myself to learn about wisdom and knowledge, and about insanity and foolishness. And I discovered that this is also like chasing after the wind.
